Liverpool Will Let Mamadou Sakho leave for £30m

Liverpool have confirmed that they will let Mamadou Sakho leave the club this summer for a fee of at least £30m after the defenders loan at Crystal Palace.

An article today in The Guardian by one of their top sports writers and Palace fan Dominic Fifield has reported that Liverpool will sell Sakho this summer and will seek to receive at least £30m after impressing during our battle against relegation.

The article can be read here.

While I would love Palace to sign Sakho and any other player of his calibre I am pretty sure that the club wouldn’t shell out £30m on one defender when that money and wages could be spent on a minimum of two defenders of good quality.

While I understand it could just be game playing by Liverpool to get the most money they can for a player they do not want to keep hold of it would seem both sides will think they hold a strong hand when playing this game of cards.

Liverpool want to get rid of the player and raise some transfer funds while Palace can leave Liverpool ‘holding the baby’ which may bring them to their senses.

The only fly in the ointment will be other big clubs from around Europe who may be able to spend £30m on a defender as they will probably be looking at adding a player or two while we will be looking at adding between 5-10 players this summer.

In our favour is how well Sakho was received by the Palace fans and that he already has friends in the Palace squad.

It will be interesting to see how this one plays out but while I’d love to have Sakho sign on a permanent deal I would only do it if we could get him for a maximum of £20m else there are other options around.

Look at how much money Tomkins, Schlupp, van Aarnholt and Milivolevic cost us. Not one of them cost more than £13m and in a year’s time, should they perform as they have done, their value would be in excess of £20m!

While Big Sam has some failings he has a lot of advantages and one of them is his ability to find a (relatively speaking) bargain and I’m excited to see who he can bring to the club from his vast contact book.
